What Are The Different Property Types?

There are different types of houses that buyers can consider when buying a property. The most common types include bungalows, cottage, detached, semi-detached, flat, terrace and end of terrace.

Mobirise

Bungalow

The word ‘bungalow’ originated from Hindi word ‘bangla’, which means ‘belonging to Bengal’. Bangla describes detached cottages and were built for Europeans that were settling in India. Bungalows are generally a one storey house, have low roofs and detached. This type of house is disabled-friendly, as it only has one floor, making it easier to move around on their own.

Cottage

Typically, a cottage will have thick walls and small windows, purposely to withstand cold weathers. It has structural pillars (which used to take up most of the living area), low ceilings and a thatched roof. These were originally situated in rural or semi-rural areas, but have developed in the cities as well overtime. Cottages come with one and a half storeys, with the upper storey being smaller than the ground floor. This type of property is located mainly on rural regions.

Mobirise

Detached

Detached properties give the occupants more privacy as they are single properties that do not share walls with other structures. Because of this, the demand for a detached house is very high, which is also a factor that makes them very expensive compared to other type of houses.

Mobirise

Semi-detached

Unlike detached houses, these share a wall with another house, enabling it to use spaces more efficiently as it joins houses together. Because of this factor, semi-detached houses are common in the UK, making it less expensive than detached houses, so they are more commonly bought or rented. Owners of this property type have the option to extend at the back and sides and is also somewhat private.

Mobirise

Flat

A flat is a self-contained living area located in one part of a building, where other flats also exist for the use of others and communal areas are shared between the occupants. Flats are more commonly located in the heart of cities and metropolitan areas, as it saves space in an already crowded area.

Mobirise

Terrace

Like semi-detached houses, terraced houses also share walls with other houses. Each one is the same in terms of structure and are commonly located in industrial towns and cities. This type of property was built to accommodate high number of working class in the 19th century.

Mobirise

End of terrace

This is the same as a terraced house, located at its end. However, instead of it sharing both walls with other houses, end of terrace house only shares one wall with another house whilst the other side is detached.
